Hawley Seeks to End Pensions for Sexually Abusive Lawmakers
Did you know Eric Swalwell is still eligible for his congressional pension? Despite resigning in disgrace after a flurry of sexual abuse and rape allegations, including claims that he drugged, choked, and bruised his victims, the former congressman could still rake in tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars per year.
If that feels gross to you, you are not alone. Josh Hawley agrees.
The Missouri senator on Thursday disclosed his plans to introduce the "No Pensions for Congressional Predators Act," seeking to prevent lawmakers convicted of sex crimes from receiving their taxpayer-funded retirements after leaving office. Politicians are currently required to forfeit their pensions if convicted of felony fraud, treason, bribery, and perjury, but not sexual abuse.
"Right now, a member of Congress can be convicted of sexual abuse and still receive a taxpayer-funded pension. That is unacceptable," Hawley said. “The only thing the government should be paying for, for these people, is a jail cell."
