Democrat Congressman Jamie Raskin on Tuesday demanded the Trump administration fly hundreds of deported suspected gang members, whom he referred to as “gang bangers,” back into the United States.

“I call on my colleagues … to demand that the Trump Administration comply with all judicial orders while appealing whichever ones they want to appeal, and to demand the return of people unlawfully taken to El Salvador on that so-called plane full of ‘gang bangers,'” he said during a Congressional hearing.

Raskin’s argument centered around the idea that the alleged gang members deserve due process before being shipped to prison in El Salvador, but that detail is likely to become lost in the news cycle. All voters will remember, and all the GOP’s 2026 campaigns will emphasize, is the congressman’s apparent empathy for “gang bangers.” His political team ought to work on refining his messaging. Handing the other side free ad material is not an effective political strategy.
