Footage of Brigitte Macron apparently endorsing the patriarchy emerged on Tuesday, showing the French first lady calling feminist protesters sales connes — roughly translated as “stupid bitches” — backstage at a comedy show.

The quip came during a conversation with comedian Ary Abittan, who told Macron he was “afraid” of activists interrupting his performance. The feminists are not fans of Abittan because he is an accused rapist. But Brigitte has his back.

“If there are stupid bitches, we’ll toss them out,” she said to ease his worries. 

The former school teacher’s remark drew immediate condemnation from political figures and activists, with critics labeling it “inelegant,” “extremely grave,” and “very sexist.”
