Guatemalan Immigrant Arrested After Unimaginable Subway Murder
New York police arrested a Guatemalan immigrant on Sunday after he allegedly set a sleeping subway rider aflame and watched her burn to death.
The barbarous murder, which the NYPD called “one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit,” took place early in the morning on an idling Coney Island F train. A terrified bystander caught it on camera.
In that footage, the witness yells, “Yo! Sorry to [her] family! This is a person right here,” as the killer calmly watches his victim burn to death. Police arrested the suspect later in the day after he fled the scene. Investigators believe the crime was random.
New York’s subways are a catastrophe. In September, police data reported a 60% yearly increase in murders on the public transit system.
