Recent polling shows that 71% of Democrats support voter ID laws. Based on that figure, you’d think liberals in Congress would get on board with requiring ballot casters to prove their identities. But they’re not.

The House passed the SAVE America Act on Wednesday, approving the legislation to require proof of citizenship to register to vote, enact a voter ID requirement at the ballot box, and prohibit mail-only voter registrations. Only one Democrat, Congressman Henry Cuellar, voted in favor.

It’s hard to imagine a more common-sense proposal than voter ID. Any country that takes “democracy” seriously should ensure its elections are legitimate. Those opposed obviously want to cheat. 

“If you need an ID to board a plane, open a bank account, or even to buy certain types of cold medicine, you should need an ID to vote,” Rep. Andy Barr said on Wednesday. “Anyone who opposes voter ID to safeguard the integrity of our elections is anti-American.”
