DEMOCRACY IN ACTION: Kim Jong Un Wins Reelection
North Korea announced the reelection of Kim Jong Un as General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea on Monday, celebrating his unanimous victory on the fourth day of its ongoing Congress.
“The noble patriotic example shown by Comrade Kim Jong Un and his ardent appeal made all the people redouble the pride in and honor of our great state and the unique thoughts,” Politburo member Ri Il-hwan said in a congratulatory speech. “In the era of Kim Jong Un, we have entered the world of advanced civilization,” he added.
Whether Kim had any opponents remains unclear, and his overwhelming margin of victory leaves two likely options. He is either among history’s greatest leaders, so popular that not a single person would want him ousted, or his country’s delegates cast their ballots under physical threat. We’re sure you can guess which is correct.
With the election behind him, Kim can return his focus to grooming his teenage daughter as his successor. Sources say the girl, reportedly named “Kim Ju Hye,” currently serves as North Korea’s “missile general director” and will run the country after her father’s death.
