Donald Trump is daring to do what many of his predecessors never could have dreamed of: use his leverage to get what he wants.

After months of threatening Mexico with crippling tariffs, the president on Monday got America’s southern neighbor to commit to deploying 10,000 troops to the countries’ shared border as part of an increased effort to combat drug trafficking into the United States. 

Both Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the deal on social media just hours before the tariffs were scheduled to take effect. They are now on pause for one month.
