Democrats Fight to Keep Illegal Immigrants on Medicaid
The “big, beautiful bill” is a massive piece of legislation. Naturally, it has plenty of provisions that warrant good-faith debate.
An amendment to strip Medicaid funding from states that provide coverage to illegal immigrants should not have been one of them. That’s as common-sense a proposal as we can imagine. But not for Democrats.
43 of that anti-law party’s legislators voted against that amendment on Monday, causing it to miss the 60-vote threshold required to secure a final spot in the bill. Republican Susan Collins joined them. They also blocked a separate amendment to prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving Medicaid altogether.
