Donald Trump left the door open on running for a constitutionally prohibited third term on Saturday, saying, “There are methods which you could do it” and that “a lot of people want me to.”

The president’s comments came during a telephone interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, which she reported on during yesterday’s Meet the Press. Many people immediately interpreted the remarks as some sort of gimmick to garner a reaction from the Left, but Trump insisted that’s not the case. “I’m not joking,” he plainly said.

Amending the Constitution to abolish the two-term limit would take a lot. First, either two-thirds of Congress or two-thirds of the states would have to agree to call a constitutional convention to officially propose the change. Then at least three-quarters of the states would have to ratify the new rule.
