Tesla Arson Suspect Released over Jail’s Lack of “Gender-Affirming Care”
A judge has ordered the release of Owen McIntire, the suspect accused of setting fire to a Tesla dealership in March, because he could not continue to live in custody without access to "gender-affirming care."
The decision came after the alleged arsonist’s attorney argued that continued detention would disrupt his “serious and ongoing” medical treatment, including care for depression and “gender-affirming” services. He reportedly began receiving the treatment the same month as the Tesla fire.
It feels worth acknowledging that there could have been another way for McIntire to continue receiving all the “gender-affirming care” his heart desired. Just don’t huck a Molotov cocktail into a car dealership in the first place. But here we are.
He is reportedly scheduled to appear in federal court on Thursday.
