A NASA-backed planetary defense group has reportedly begun efforts to pinpoint an unusual comet after it emitted an alloy not seen in nature. Scientists believe extraterrestrial technology could be fueling the cosmic anomaly and view it as a potential threat to Earth.

The object, Manhattan-sized comet 3I/ATLAS, is believed to be the International Asteroid Warning Network’s first target. The group is a worldwide coalition of organizations and space experts who collaborate to detect and monitor potentially hazardous asteroids. 3I/ATLAS has displayed a host of unusual characteristics, including emitting a plume that is unheard of in comets and performing a dramatic tail reversal. Its behavior could indicate that it was an alien probe sent to do recon on Earth, according to Harvard astrophysicist Dr. Avi Loeb.
