Anti-Law Chicago Mayor Creates “ICE Free” Zones
The mayor of Chicago signed an executive order establishing “ICE Free Zones” across his city on Monday, aiming to block Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal immigration officials from accessing city-owned property.
“We will not tolerate ICE agents violating our residents’ constitutional rights nor will we allow the federal government to disregard our local authority,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said. “With this Executive Order, Chicago stands firm in protecting the Constitutional rights of our residents and immigrant communities and upholding our democracy.”
The order empowers Chicago officials to designate city-owned spaces as “controlled by the City of Chicago” and not allowed to “be used for civil immigration enforcement.” It also allows private businesses to designate their property as “ICE Free” zones.
This would seem crazy in any country that’s serious about upholding its laws. In America, it’s one of the least surprising stories of the week.
