NATO Sec. Gen. Tells Europe: “Stop Complaining,” “Get Your Act Together”
NATO chief Mark Rutte has some blunt advice for the alliance’s European members upset by Donald Trump promoting American interests on the world stage: stop complaining and present solutions.
“Get into the debate, not by complaining… but by coming up with concrete ideas,” he told the Munich Security Conference over the weekend.
The president had a spotty relationship with the alliance during his first term, defined by perpetual frustrations over its members refusing to uphold their defense spending commitments despite the U.S. exceeding its.
Trump’s anger has yielded results. In 2018, only six member states spent at least 2% of their GDP on defense. Nearly two dozen of them met the target in 2024.
