Permanent Washington spending billions of taxpayer dollars on “defending democracy” in a country that canceled its elections will go down as one of this century’s greatest ironies. It’s so absurd that you almost have to laugh.

Donald Trump made headwaves on Tuesday by announcing a different approach.

“I would say that, you know, when they want a seat at the table, you could say the people have to, wouldn’t the people of Ukraine have to say, like, you know, it’s been a long time since we’ve had an election,” he said at Mar-a-Lago. “That’s not a Russia thing. That’s something coming from me and coming from many other countries also, you know, Ukraine is being just wiped out.”

The only plausible explanation for why the previous administration opposed allowing Ukrainians to have an election is that it feared their program was unpopular inside the warring country. If it was, then Ukraine’s citizens should have had the right to elect leaders who would put an end to it. That’s the whole point of democracy. It’s almost as if Washington doesn’t actually care about Ukraine and really only sees the country as a means toward its weird anti-Russia agenda’s end.
